Magento Facts 1 | Name & Founding

  • Founding:
    Magento was developed by the Varien company which was owned by the students Roy Rubin and Yoav Kutner. The first Version was published on March 31, 2008.
  • Name:
    Magento was first introduced as Bento. Due to copyright problems the name was changed.
  • Inspiration:
    The name is inspired by the popular game Dungeons & Dragons. The developers changed the “Ben” in “Bento” to “Mage”, which is linked to the fantasy world of D&D. Furthermore the Logo is inspired by a novel called Dragonlance which is based on the game.
  • Acquisitions:
    Since the founding Magento was sold 3 times. It was acquired by eBay from 2011 to 2015 and since 2018 it is owned by the software company Adobe.

  • Leader:
    Magento is the most used platform among the top 1000 Retailers in North America including big brands like Walmart or Adidas. The Top 1000 Retailers are worth 51 billion $ of online sales.
  • Global:
    Magento is the seventh most used CMS worldwide. More precisely with a market share of 1.9% it is the second most used pure eCommerce CMS after Shopify.
  • Version:
    The current version 2.3.2 was released in June 2019, but the older versions of Magento 1.x are still widely used. Users of the old versions should consider moving to Magento 2.3. Magento will stop the official support and updates for Magento 1.x in June 2020. 
  • Themes:
    There is 700 Magento themes on the most popular Theme Marketplace “Themeforest”. In average the themes come with 9 pre installed extensions to add extra value and functions.

    Magento Live is a networking and educational event which is officially hosted by Magento.While the first Magento Live Event of 2019 took place in Australia the second event this year will cover the European Market.
    From 22. Oct. – Mi., 23. Oct. Magento welcomes over 2,000 experts and industries top Keynote Speakers in Amsterdam.

    Meet Magento is a official partner of Magento. It is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect everyone across the globe that works with Magento Commerce. The Meet Magento Events take place all around the world and are organized by local Magento Experts. Among the participants are the most important insiders from the e-commerce and Magento environment. 


  • MagentoIMAGINE
    The Magento Imagine Summit is held in Las Vegas and represents the official flagship conference of Magento. The event brings together more than 3,000 experts of all nations. It is not sure how the event will look like in the future due to an announcement of Adobe to run it at the same time as the official Adobe Summit.
